In Nepal, maternal health services were already fragile, but the COVID crisis has significantly worsened the situation, especially for vulnerable people living in slums. The fear of catching the virus in the hospital, but also the medical authorities discouraged the usual check-ups. During this period, infant and maternal mortality doubled.
In the Kathmandu valley, only one government hospital accepted women for delivery without a PCR test (it took about six hours to get the result.) and an NGO of nurses went to the slums to compensate for the lack of medical care.
